Lots to do in the Huron Valley

There’s certainly lots to do in the Huron Valley area – Milford, Highland White Lake and Commerce – in the month of October, much of it to do with pumpkins and hayrides and  little ghosts and goblins. To check out the events in this area go to my Web site –www.movetomilford.com I try to keep up with the posters that pop up around town and the events that various groups and organizations are running during the month.

If your group or organization has an upcoming event that you’d like to see posted in the calendar or a poster for the Poster Wall on my site, please send me an email – normwerner@comcast.net If you have a PDF file of your poster or flyer that would be great.

One of my favorite annual events is coming up near the end of the months – the Milford BOO Bash. There is nothing that epitomizes small town America more than this parade of costumed kids past the doors of the downtown stores and businesses. Merchants and restaurateurs hand out candy to the kids as they pass by. I’m sure that Mayberry probably had something like this, too; or they wish that they had.

Looking further forward there’s an interesting Survival Training weekend at Kensington Metropark on he first weekend in November. Participants will learn how to find their way out of being lost on Saturday and how to build as shelter (I guess if you can get out) on Sunday. Also on that Sunday is an event in Milford at the Hibbard Tavern commemorating the 120th birthday of Edsel Ford. See  more about all ofth is on the calendar at www.movetomilford.com

Upcoming events in Milford, Michigan

It’s winter and in Michigan. That means it’s cold; but, that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do, especially in Milford and the Huron Valley area. There are several upcoming events for charitable causes that will be fun and help raise much needed money for worthwhile causes.

The first is this week, Thursday, Feb 7. The annual Taste of the Valley is the primary fund raising event for he Huron Valley Youth Assistance Program. The HVYA program, which is run in Milford and Highland Townships, has as its goal assisting “at risk” youth of the area. The risk is that they will pursue a path of juvenile delinquency that will inevitably lead to worse behavior later on in life. The HVYA Program provides counseling and other activities to encourage and support the youth to take a different path.

The Taste of the Valley will take place at Bakers of Milford starting at 7 pm and will feature food samples from some of the top restaurants in the area. There will also be a raffle and a silent auction for gift baskets that have been donated for this cause. Tickets are $20 in advance (you can get them at either Township office) or $25 at the door.

In Valentine’s Day, Feb 14, the Community Sharing Outreach organization has organized an event that they call Food from the Heart. This event will take place in Downtown Milford and features live music at all of the participating venues. Many stores and restaurants are participating. You can see the list by clicking here to view the poster. As with most Community Sharing event, your “ticket” to get into this event is a can of food or box of non-perishable food (of course a cash donation is always welcomed). You can stroll through downtown and stop off in participating shops and restaurants to listen to the music and enjoy your shopping or dining. For a list of performers at the various locations, click here.

In support of the Food from the Heart event, the Milford YMCA is having a Parent Night Out for children so parents can attend this fun event. Please call the Y to register call 248-714-4412 and it is $13.00 an hour for Y members and $17.00 an hour for non-members. So, plan on dropping the kids off at the Y and then enjoying a night of music and fun in Downtown Milford in support of a good cause.

Then, on Feb 16 there is LAUGHS AT THE LEGION - at the American Legion Hall, Milford. 5 pm the doors open, optional burger and fries meal available for $7 and a cash bar. The Comedy Show starts at 7 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. This event benefits the Highland-White Lake Business Association Scholarship Fund and the summer-time Sparks in the Park event.

Finally, Oakpoint Church on Milford’s South side (on South Hill Rd) is hosting Milford’s Beast Feast on Feb 23 - 6 - 9 pm at Oakpoint Church - a pot luck dinner for hunters from the area. Bring a wild (or tame) game dish to pass - some other food will be supplied. Exchange stories with fellow hunters, plus a raffle and other competition. Tickets are $5. For more information go to the Oakpoint Web site.

There are also some upcoming free community events, which are just held to have fun and don’t raise money for any group.

The first is the Milford Community Snow Day - Feb 9 - 4 pm until 6 pm, in Milford Central Park - If our crazy winter weather cooperates there will be Ice Skating/ & a Figure Skating demo, Winter Crafts, Winter Games, Snowshoeing, Sled Dogs, Voyage in Time Re-enactment, Bonfire, Cocoa & Cookies, fun for the whole family. Click here to view the poster for this event.

There are also the Daddy-Daughter Dance and the Mother-Son Dance on Feb 16 - 7 - 9 pm - sponsored by Huron Valley Recreation & Community Education. The Daddy-Daughter dance will be at Milford High School and the Mother-Son Dance at Heritage Elementary School. $25 per couple for residents, $35 per couple for non residents. $10 for each additional daughter. Click here to see the registration form for both dances.

The next big weekend in Milford - the Home Tour & Car Show

The warm afterglow of a successful (albeit a bit wet) Milford Memories is fading fast and we turn our attention to the next big thing – the third weekend in September when the Milford Home Tour is the weekend event. That same weekend, on Sunday only there is the biggest car show in the area – the Milford Car Show – and a Tractor Show. In addition the local Rotary Club holds their annual rubber duck race on the Huron River on Sunday. It’s a fun-filled weekend for the whole family.

The 36th annual Milford Home Tour will feature tours through 5 Milford homes, as well as having the Milford Historical Museum, the log cabin next to the firehouse and the Pettibone Creek Powerhouse open to tour. Go to the Milford Historical Society Web site for more details on the Home Tour as they become available. Tickets are available ahead of time at the Museum for $15.

The Car Show takes place on Sunday and takes up most of Main Street and features hundreds of cars from classics to cruisers. The Car show is judged by the attendees in several classes and the best in each class wins an award. Then there is the Sponsors Award, which is usually given to the car judged by the event sponsors as the best in the show. For more on the Car Show and to get a registration form, if you’d like to be in the show, go to the Web site – http://www.milfordcarshow.com

The Tractor Show is held on Sunday out at the Huron Valley State Bank on the corner of Milford Road and GM Road. Tractors of all vintages and from all around the area are featured. The Tractor Show is run by Bill Crawford, a local farmer who lives and works on the Crawford Farm, a Sesquicentennial farm in Milford Township that has been in the Crawford family for the entire time.

The Duck Race is a fund raiser event for the local Rotary Club and features thousands of yellow rubber ducks dumped into the Huron River upstream of Milford’s Central Park. The numbered ducks then “race” down the river, with the owner of the first duck to the finish line in Central Park winning a cash prize. It’s always a lot of fun to root for your duck in the frantic race to the finish. For more on how to buy a duck for the race go to http://www.milfordducks.com/

So mark your calendars now for September 15 & 16 and plan on spending the weekend in Milford. Come out from the events and visit some of our local stores and fine restaurants while you’re there. The newest restaurant on Main St – The Palate – will be open by then. All of our restaurants will be open in Saturday and many will also be open Sunday for the Car Show. It’s always fun to visit Milford and even more so when there are so many things to do.
